I’ve always gotten a weird feeling from songs with the name Michael in them. A Michael in a song feels to me like a grown man who is simultaneously still a child—I don’t know why. Not necessarily a “man-child”—though my discomfort with that language feels like the Michael-song discomfort—it’s more like multiple times at the same time, kaleidoscopically, like the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. And a frightening, bottomless intimacy seems to be at play, one I both cringe away from and am intrigued by. It feels like a 70s man, probably with a beard, and the lighting is warm yellow—repulsive, too nostalgic.
