A TI-TE-DO cadence (see the second half of CW22) has the faint quality of a joke. Of going the wrong direction to get where you’re going. Yet music is strange. Because of octaves, there’s a DO, if that’s where you’re headed, in either direction. Everything is in either direction—maybe you’ve run out of range on the instrument you’re playing, but the pitch is available. On top of that, when you really get down in there, you start to get the uncanny sense that everything is so close to everything else, by being of a piece with it somehow, that it’s already there.
